Chicago Fire Promo Teases Emotional Crossover with Chicago Med—And It’s Anything But Smooth

Chicago Fire may have been missing Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) in its April 23 episode, but rest assured that she and Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) will be back together for the May 7 episode “Cut Me Open.” The characters will get one step closer to adopting a child, but as evidenced by the promo, it will not be an easy or stress-free process.

The promo sees both Kidd and Severide going to the hospital when the woman carries the baby they plan to adopt goes into labor. They are all smiles as they head to Gaffney Medical Center, and like many fans predicted, we get a mini-Chicago Med crossover. Dr. Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram), who has become one of Med’s most important characters, is on hand to help with the birth.

Dr. Hannah Asher will appear in Chicago Fire

It’s a fun addition, and the sort of thing that One Chicago has always been good about. We know the three shows in the franchise exist in the same universe, but it’s the extra step taken to incorporate the characters into each other’s shows that makes the shared universe feel real. It’s exciting to see Asher in the mix for a Chicago Fire episode. Unfortunately, the circumstances could not be more tense.

The woman set to give birth experiences complications, and a team led by Dr. Asher announces that they will have to perform a C-section. The promo then cuts to a stressed out Kidd in a waiting room, presumably weighing the possibilities of what could happen to both the woman and the baby. It’s a nightmare scenario, and the grim expressions on everybody’s face communicate what’s at stake.

Stellaride are stressed about their child’s health

Dr. Asher interacted with some of her One Chicago peers during the January crossover, but she did not get a chance to deal with Kidd and Severide directly. We anticipate emotions will be high for the couple and the woman giving birth, meaning it will fall to Asher to keep a level head. We also suspect other Chicago Med characters may appear in the episode, given that the action will largely take place within Gaffney Medical Center.

One Chicago is no stranger to tragedy, as evidenced by the slew of deaths that have occurred over the past few seasons, but we are still confident that Asher and her team will prevail, and Stellaride will meet the child that will change both of their lives by episode’s end.
