Very Shocking Update: Monica Raymund Opens Up About Leaving Chicago Fire—‘I Had to Take a Risk

Fans of Chicago Fire were caught off guard when Monica Raymund, who played the beloved paramedic Gabby Dawson, made the unexpected decision to leave the hit NBC drama in 2018.

Having been an integral part of the show since its debut in 2012, her character’s departure at the beginning of Season 7 left many wondering how the series would move forward without her.

Gabby was not only a fan-favorite but also half of the adored couple known as “Dawsey” alongside Captain Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer). Her exit raised questions about what the future would hold for both Casey and Firehouse 51.

As part of the One Chicago universe, Chicago Fire follows the heroic firefighters and paramedics of the fictional Firehouse 51 as they risk their lives to protect the people of Chicago. But beyond the intense rescues and high-stakes emergencies, the show also explores the deep personal connections formed within the team. Over six seasons, viewers watched Gabby and Casey’s relationship evolve, culminating in their marriage during Season 5. However, in a surprising twist, Gabby left Chicago behind to pursue humanitarian work in Puerto Rico, marking the end of her storyline—at least for the time being.

While her character’s exit was driven by a new calling, the real reason behind Raymund’s departure was her desire for new challenges. After fulfilling her six-year contract, she made the difficult decision to step away from Chicago Fire and seek fresh opportunities. In an interview with The Chicago Tribune, Raymund explained that she wanted to explore different roles and set down roots in Los Angeles. Though grateful for her time on the show, she felt it was necessary to take a leap of faith to expand her career.

Her departure stunned Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas, who initially refused to believe she was serious about leaving. Even after the season wrapped, he attempted to convince her to stay. However, Raymund stood firm in her choice, acknowledging that while she cherished her time on the show, it was time to move forward.

Following her exit, Raymund took on a grittier role in Hightown, a crime drama on Starz, where she plays Jackie Quiñones, a federal fisheries agent struggling with addiction. The series, set in Cape Cod, is a stark contrast to the action-packed world of Chicago Fire, allowing Raymund to immerse herself in a more complex and intense character.

Despite her departure, Raymund has not entirely severed ties with Chicago Fire. She made a brief return in Season 8 for a mid-season episode, reuniting with her former colleagues and reigniting sparks with Casey. Their brief but passionate reunion left the door open for future possibilities, and Raymund has hinted that she remains open to reprising her role.

While there is no confirmation of her return, fans continue to hope that Gabby Dawson may once again walk through the doors of Firehouse 51. For now, Monica Raymund remains focused on new projects, proving that taking a risk can lead to exciting and unexpected opportunities.
