Countdown to Burnham’s stage version of Keeping Up Appearances

Countdown Begins: Burnham’s Stage Version of Keeping Up Appearances

The genteel town of Burnham-On-Sea is about to witness a theatrical event that promises to be as delightfully chaotic as Hyacinth Bucket’s most ambitious dinner parties. From June 28 to July 2, the Princess Theatre will host a stage adaptation of the beloved BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, bringing the show’s iconic characters to life in a new and exciting way

A Local Tribute to a Timeless Classic

Keeping Up Appearances, created by Roy Clarke, originally aired from 1990 to 1995 and quickly became a staple of British television. The series followed the misadventures of Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced “Bouquet”), a social-climbing woman obsessed with appearing upper-class, and her long-suffering husband, Richard. The show was renowned for its sharp wit, memorable characters, and its satirical take on class and social status.

Now, nearly three decades later, Burnham-On-Sea’s Project Play is paying homage to this classic with a local production that promises to capture the essence of the original while adding a unique community flair

Bringing Hyacinth to Life

In the role of Hyacinth, Samantha Nicol steps into the shoes of one of television’s most iconic characters. Known for her impeccable comedic timing and commanding stage presence, Nicol’s portrayal is expected to bring Hyacinth’s pretentious charm and delusional grandeur to life in a way that will resonate with both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Joining Nicol is a talented ensemble cast that includes Paul Williams as Emmett, Adele Gomm as Elizabeth, George Clement as Onslow, Katy Bridgewater as Daisy, Sarah Martin as Rose, Carol Roberts as Mrs. Debden, Andy Boult as Milly, and John Burnham as Daddy. Each actor brings their own interpretation to these beloved characters, ensuring a fresh yet faithful rendition of the original series

A Community Effort

Directed by Debbie Birkett, with Simone Lynch serving as assistant director and Luke Adams as executive stage manager, this production is a testament to the power of community theatre. Project Play, a local arts initiative, has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition, providing a platform for local talent and fostering a sense of community through the arts.

The production is also a follow-up to Project Play’s successful staging of Dad’s Army the previous year, demonstrating the group’s growing influence and commitment to bringing quality theatre to Burnham-On-Sea.

What to Expect

Audiences can look forward to a faithful adaptation of the original sitcom, complete with Hyacinth’s infamous “candlelight suppers,” her obsession with her “white slimline telephone with automatic redial,” and, of course, her attempts to impress the upper crust while managing her less-than-refined family.

The play’s plot centers around Hyacinth’s determination to involve herself in the local production, much to the dismay of her family and neighbors. Her attempts to prove her social superiority are constantly hampered by her lower-class extended family, whom she is desperate to hide. As always, her efforts lead to a series of comedic misadventures that highlight the show’s enduring appeal

A Nod to the Original

While the stage adaptation remains true to the spirit of the original series, it also offers a unique twist by incorporating elements of community theatre. The play is set within a play, with Emmett directing a local production and Hyacinth insisting on taking the lead role. This meta-theatrical approach adds an extra layer of humor and complexity, allowing the cast to showcase their talents in new and inventive ways.

Additionally, the absence of Richard Bucket, Hyacinth’s long-suffering husband, from the stage production adds an intriguing dynamic. While Richard is frequently mentioned and his presence felt, his off-stage absence allows for a greater focus on Hyacinth’s interactions with her family and neighbors, highlighting her delusions of grandeur and the comedic tension that arises from her attempts to maintain appearances.

Tickets and Information

Performances will take place daily from Tuesday, June 28, to Saturday, July 2, at 7:30 PM, with an additional matinee on Saturday at 2:30 PM. Tickets are priced at £17.50 each and can be purchased online through The Princess Theatre’s official website or by calling the Box Office at 01278 784464.

Given the popularity of the show and the limited seating, early booking is highly recommended to avoid disappointment.

Final Thoughts

Burnham-On-Sea’s upcoming stage production of Keeping Up Appearances offers a delightful opportunity to revisit the world of Hyacinth Bucket and her eccentric family. With a talented local cast, a faithful yet inventive adaptation, and the charm of community theatre, this production is poised to be a standout event in the town’s cultural calendar.

Whether you’re a longtime fan of the original series or new to the world of Hyacinth Bucket, this stage version promises an evening of laughter, nostalgia, and theatrical excellence.
