He died peacefully in his sleep at his home on the Isle of Wight .

A Career That Spanned Decades

Geoffrey Hughes’s career in television began in the 1960s, with appearances in iconic British series such as Z-Cars and The Likely Lads. He remained with the show until 1983, making a brief return in 1987 .

In addition to his work on Coronation Street, Hughes gained widespread recognition for his role as Onslow, the lazy and lovable brother-in-law in the hit sitcom Keeping Up Appearances. In 2009, he was appointed Deputy Lord Lieutenant for the Isle of Wight, a position that allowed him to serve as the official link between the island and the royal family at formal events .

Hughes’s personal interests were as diverse as his acting roles. He was passionate about sailing, football, golf, cricket, and rock music.
