Chicago Fire Season 14: Could Pelham Return as Truck 81’s New Leader?

A Leadership Gap Emerges at Firehouse 51

With the exit of Chief Boden and the confirmed departure of Sam Carver, Chicago Fire finds itself at a leadership crossroads. Although Dom Pascal will remain Chief of Firehouse 51, the future of Truck 81’s command is still uncertain—raising speculation about the potential return of Lieutenant Jason Pelham, played by Brett Dalton.

Pelham, who briefly served as lieutenant of Truck 81 in Season 10, left the show on amicable terms but was never given a firm closure. Now, the timing for a comeback seems perfect.

Why Pelham’s Return Makes Sense

When Pelham first joined the team, he faced resistance—notably from Stella Kidd, who felt the role was rightfully hers. But over time, Pelham won over his colleagues with humility, integrity, and tactical excellence. His departure to another house came after Kidd reclaimed the lieutenant position, but the door was never firmly closed.

Now that Carver is gone, and with no confirmation that Kidd will resume full-time leadership on Truck 81, Pelham could be the right person to stabilize the team. He has history, fan approval, and an established bond with Boden and Severide.

Showrunner Andrea Newman hasn’t ruled it out either:

“We love Brett Dalton and Pelham is still very much part of our universe.”

A Character with Unfinished Business

Pelham’s character arc felt abruptly cut short. He had just begun forming deeper relationships with his team. There were hints of backstory—family trauma, prior transfers, trust issues—that never fully unfolded.

Bringing him back in Season 14 would allow Chicago Fire to explore those unfinished threads, adding emotional weight and maturity to the squad.

It also helps that Dalton has expressed willingness to return, saying in a recent podcast:

“I’m always open to more. I loved that team and the fans were incredible. I think there’s more to say with Pelham.”

How His Return Could Affect Other Characters

Pelham’s leadership could particularly impact newer or underdeveloped characters. His presence might offer a stabilizing force for Violet Mikami, who has struggled with loss and change. It could also create a mentoring relationship with Gallo, who continues to wrestle with personal instability.

For Stella Kidd, a Pelham return may reignite unresolved tension. The two had a complicated dynamic, and with her divided focus between Girls on Fire and Firehouse 51, their leadership philosophies could clash again.

Balancing Nostalgia with Growth

Chicago Fire has always walked a tightrope between honoring its legacy and moving forward. Bringing back familiar faces like Pelham allows the show to do both—provide continuity while introducing new emotional arcs.

But the showrunners will need to be careful. Fan service without substance could backfire. Pelham’s return must be earned and meaningful, not just convenient.

Season 14: A Season of Rebalancing

With Boden gone, Ritter and Carver out, and Pascal newly committed, Season 14 is shaping up to be a season of rebalancing. Every member of Firehouse 51 will be forced to adapt—to new leadership, new losses, and possibly new beginnings.

Whether Pelham returns or not, the dynamics are already shifting. But one thing is certain: Chicago Fire still has plenty of fuel in its storytelling tank.
