Big Changes Ahead: NBC Renews ‘Chicago Fire’ & Spinoffs—But With a Major Twist

NBC has greenlit new seasons for its Chicago franchise, securing Chicago Fire for Season 14, Chicago P.D. for Season 13, and Chicago Med for Season 11. The renewals, announced amid ongoing negotiations, align with expectations but come with budget cuts, as Deadline relayed.

Basically, fans can anticipate more drama, though with changes to cast appearances and episode counts.

The Chicago shows face reduced budgets, a practice that began in the 2022-23 season across NBC’s One Chicago and Law & Order franchises. Minimum guarantees for series regulars remain limited, meaning most actors will appear in fewer episodes — typically missing two to four per season. Additionally, casts have been asked to establish Illinois residency, as filming occurs in Chicago. Non-residents may see further reduced episode counts.

Episode orders for the upcoming seasons are undecided but are expected to dip below this season’s 22 episodes. Annual 5% raises for some cast members have also been eliminated, according to Deadline. These measures aim to control costs while maintaining the shows’ high-stakes storytelling.

Cast Changes Shake Up Chicago File

Contract negotiations continue for veteran cast members, including Chicago Fire’s Taylor Kinney, whose deal expires this season. Meanwhile, Chicago Fire will lose two stars at the end of Season 13. Daniel Kyri and Jake Lockett will depart as the show trims expenses. Deadline sources hint at potential additional exits across the franchise, following recent departures of fan-favorite characters.

The Chicago shows have weathered cast changes before, yet their loyal audience remains hooked. Fans speculate whether the final episodes of the current season, airing Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, will tease next season’s arcs. Filming for Season 13 has wrapped, leaving storylines up in the air.

Where to Watch and What’s Next

All episodes of Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med are available on Peacock, with new episodes streaming Thursdays. The new seasons are scheduled to premiere this fall on NBC, though exact dates remain unconfirmed. Fans can catch up on the action-packed drama and brace for fresh challenges facing Chicago’s first responders and medical heroes.

The Chicago franchise continues to captivate with its blend of heroism and heart. Despite budget tweaks and cast shifts, NBC’s commitment ensures these beloved series will return to thrill viewers.
