From Firehouse to the Force: Chicago Fire’s Hudon Eyes Team-Up with Olivia Benson

Before she appeared on Chicago Fire as one of the new cast additions in Season 12, Jocelyn Hudon had previously lent her talent to other procedural shows, including the ABC fan-favorite series, 9-1-1. However, her time on the Ryan Murphy side of the TV world put her on the wrong side of the law. Hudon appeared in 9-1-1 Season 3, Episode 14, “The Taking of Dispatch 9-1-1,” in a guest role that saw her as part of a terrorist group that held the dispatchers hostage to keep them from interfering in a heist operation they were conducting at a museum in town.

It’s been almost five years since her brief stop at 9-1-1, which came in 2020, and now the actress is looking back fondly on her time on the show. Recalling most of the details, Hudon described her experience as “cool,” especially as her character had to encounter Sergeant Athena Grant (played by Angela Bassett). “I remember everything from that episode!” Hudon said in her recent interview with TV Insider. “Angela Bassett arrested me at the train station. It was awesome.” Sharing how she landed the role, the actress continued:

“I was in Bora Bora at the time when I got the audition and I was like, ‘Oh, okay, yeah, fine.’ The last thing you want to do when you’re on vacation is your hair. And I was downtown like, ‘Screw it. Okay, I’m going to blow dry my hair, put makeup on,’ and I taped the audition for 9-1-1, and then I got it, which is amazing. I loved filming that. L.A., and having Angela Bassett put me in handcuffs was a great start to the year. It was so cool because it was kind of a surprise that my character was the bad guy, which I love. I love a twist. I loved playing a darker character. That’s really fun for me to do.”

These days, though, Hudon is best recognized as one of the heroes of Chicago Fire as Paramedic Lizzie Novak. Novak was promoted to a series regular in Season 13, which has seen the character enjoy more screen time and a deepening arc. Hudon recently spoke about Novak’s will-they-won’t-they dynamic with Jack Damon (Michael Bradway), sharing that she would love for their slow burn to continue in the upcoming Season 14.
