It’s going to be a shame to lose them, and now we’re worried about how they’re going to be written out.

There are four ways that the show could handle their exits. Of course, this is a Dick Wolf show. There’s one way that we’ll probably see the exit happen.

Chicago Fire chooses to kill one or both of them off

Chicago Fire is known for killing characters off now and then. In a recent episode, Chief Pascal’s wife, Monica, was killed in a car accident. But before that, we’ve had the likes of Chief Hawkins, Otis, and Shay killed off in the line of duty. It’s been some time since a series regular has met this fate, so there is a chance that it will happen in the Chicago Fire season 13.

It may not be in the finale itself. Chicago Fire and the rest of the One Chicago universe is known for cliffhanger endings. Lives could be on the line, leading to one or both of the characters being written out early in the 14th season.

Carver could end up falling off the wagon

We want to see Carver succeed in his (surprise) fight against alcoholism. This is a positive look at taking accountability and making positive changes, and we have seen Carver fall off the wagon and then get back on it. Well, what if he starts drinking again?

He could be doing it in secret right now, leading to an incident on the job and being fired for that. Alternatively, he could realize that the job is making it harder for him, and that he needs to leave the CFD if he wants to succeed.

Ritter could realize that he wants to be with Dwayne

Throughout Chicago Fire season 13, we got the cutest of relationships. Ritter and Dwayne brought love and joy, but things changed as Dwayne made it clear that he was ready to move in with Ritter. On the other hand, Ritter is still happy living alone.

Well, right now, he lives with Novak after agreeing to let her stay with him. Could we find that he realizes that living with someone else isn’t all that bad? Maybe he misses Dwayne enough that he wants to move in with him, but Dwayne has moved elsewhere. This could lead to Ritter moving out of Chicago and no longer being part of the CFD.Carver could decide to move back to Texas
As Carver continues to deal with his drinking, he could decide that he needs support from family back home. He’s been to Texas before on furlough, and he could decide that he needs to head back there again. As long as it’s not to be with Tory, that’s all that matters at this point!

Rather than his drinking, something else could take him back home. Maybe he gets a call from a close family member to say that there’s been a death or someone needs help. This could be similar to the way Casey left to raise the boys of Andy Darden in Portland.

The way Chicago Fire is likely to write out the two characters

Of course, we would love to see Carver and Ritter get well-crafted exit storylines, but this is the world of Dick Wolf. We all know that these types of exits are rare, and they’re usually reserved for long-serving cast members who have chosen to leave and given time to create these exits.

Most of the time, we get a one-liner to say why someone isn’t back in the next season. There are times we’ve been graced with a quick return, such as when Alberto Rosande left Chicago Fire in season 12, but it’s not usual, so we’ll probably find out how the two have said goodbye at the start of Chicago Fire season 14.
