Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 16 Review: ‘In the Rubble’

In Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 16, titled “In the Rubble,” the show delves deeply into the themes of grief and the delicate balance between grief and anger, handling them with more nuance than in the previous episode, “Too Close.” The episode’s emotional depth stems not just from the grief of Dom Pascal but also from the way it affects the people around him, particularly those we’ve grown to care about over the years. While Dermot Mulroney’s performance as Dom Pascal is compelling and relatable, it’s Violet’s voiceover of her letter to Carver that truly anchors the episode. It’s a moment that resonates deeply, far more so than the final shot of Monica Pascal’s picture, which fails to have the same impact.

The episode revisits Dom Pascal’s character, focusing on his struggle with grief, and we watch as Firehouse 51, as always, shows up for him. Their support, particularly as they gather at Pascal’s funeral, brings an emotional weight to the story. As someone who has experienced loss, it’s easy to understand the complex emotions at play. However, the storytelling doesn’t fully convince when it comes to Pascal’s sudden change in behavior. The show leaves questions unanswered about why Pascal so readily gives in to Severide’s advice, whether he’s just trying to make Severide happy, or if there are deeper motivations at play, especially when we haven’t yet learned the full story behind Pascal’s past in Miami. It feels like a missed opportunity for a more compelling narrative.

Moreover, Pascal’s storyline feels like it could be setting up an exit, with Herrmann passing his test and potentially taking over, making Pascal’s arc feel like it’s winding down. The lack of clarity about what brought Pascal to Chicago in the first place only adds to the sense that his time on the show might be coming to an end, leaving questions about his true purpose within the larger Firehouse 51 team.

Meanwhile, the episode also features a ‘B’ plot centered around Violet’s letter, and while it doesn’t overshadow the main emotional arc, it brings the team together in a way that highlights the show’s strength in managing its large ensemble cast. The balance between serious character moments and lighter interactions remains one of Chicago Fire’s greatest strengths, and the way it juggles characters like Stella, Severide, Cap, and Tony, while still giving them meaningful roles, keeps the show fresh and engaging even after 13 seasons.

The heart of the show continues to be the team dynamic. It’s not about any one person; it’s about how each character contributes to the bigger picture, making Chicago Fire one of the rare procedurals that remains consistently strong. With a renewal likely for Season 14, it’s clear that the team-centric storytelling is what makes the series endure.

Personal highlights from the episode include enjoying the chemistry between Damon, Stella, and Severide, as well as the growing bond between Novak and Damon. It’s clear that Novak is a great friend, and her support for the team is always appreciated. The episode also reinforces the importance of food and casual conversations, with the team’s tight-knit nature shining through once again. Fans are left hoping that Violet’s letter to Carver will make its way into his hands eventually, and the interactions between Herrmann, Stella, and Severide are a reminder of why their teamwork is so essential to the show.
