Clive Swift, the talented actor most renowned for portraying the long-suffering Richard Bucket in the beloved BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has passed away at the age of 82. According to a representative, he died peacefully at home this morning after a brief illness, surrounded by family. Swift’s portrayal of Richard, opposite Dame Patricia Routledge’s Hyacinth Bucket, brought him lasting fame between 1990 and 1995. In the series, he played the patient, often exasperated husband of Hyacinth, who was obsessed with climbing the social ladder.

In addition to his iconic role in Keeping Up Appearances, Swift had a varied career. He appeared in the BBC’s The Barchester Chronicles and took on the role of Mr. Copper in the 2007 Doctor Who Christmas special. Swift also starred as Sir Ector, King Arthur’s adoptive father, in the 1981 film Excalibur, further showcasing his versatility. Born in Liverpool, he was educated at Clifton College and Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge, where he studied English Literature before moving into teaching at prestigious institutions like LAMDA and RADA.

Swift’s personal life included a marriage to novelist Margaret Drabble from 1960 to 1975, with whom he had three children: Rebecca, Adam, and Joe. Aside from acting, he was also a skilled songwriter, composing several pieces that were featured in his solo show, Richard Bucket Overflows: An Audience with Clive Swift, which toured the UK in 2007.
