Keeping Up Appearances secrets revealed 30 years on from BBC sitcom ending

“Keeping Up Appearances” was a beloved British sitcom that ran from 1990 to 1995, and it still holds a special place in the hearts of viewers worldwide. At the heart of the show was the hilariously pretentious Hyacinth Bucket, played by Patricia Routledge, whose attempts to climb the social ladder often led to comical mishaps. She was supported by her long-suffering husband Richard (Clive Swift), her slob of a brother-in-law Onslow (Geoffrey Hughes), and her sexually frustrated sister Daisy, portrayed by Judy Cornwell. Daisy, with her iconic grey cardigan and flirtations with Onslow, was a fan-favorite, often providing a humorous contrast to Hyacinth’s attempts at refinement.

Behind the scenes, the chemistry between the cast was as vibrant as it was on-screen. Judy Cornwell recalled her mischievous moments with Geoffrey Hughes, with whom she shared playful banter. Their antics often had the live audience in stitches, adding to the fun atmosphere of the show. From giggling during takes to practical jokes, the cast’s camaraderie made the filming process as enjoyable as the show itself.

Judy’s portrayal of Daisy, a cardigan-wearing, romantic, and slightly desperate character, resonated with fans, who found her relatable. The on-screen couple of Daisy and Onslow became iconic, and fans often commented on how they identified with the down-to-earth nature of their relationship. Judy herself cherished playing Daisy, appreciating the opportunity to work with talented actors like Patricia Routledge and Geoffrey Hughes, while sharing great moments both on and off the set.

“Keeping Up Appearances” became a global hit, with repeats airing in over 100 countries. Despite its success, the show ended in 1995 after five seasons, allowing the cast to pursue other projects. Patricia Routledge went on to star in “Hetty Wainthropp Investigates,” while Judy Cornwell continued writing, publishing her memoir Adventures of a Jelly Baby.

After the show’s end, there were talks of spin-offs for Daisy and Onslow, but none materialized. Judy, however, expressed that she was glad the BBC never attempted a reboot, feeling that the original magic could never be replicated. Reflecting on the lasting love for the show, Judy shared how her character’s affection for Onslow mirrored her own devotion to her husband, former Fleet Street journalist John, with whom she celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Sadly, some of the beloved cast members have passed away. Geoffrey Hughes, who played Onslow, passed away at 68 after a battle with prostate cancer. Clive Swift, who portrayed Richard Bucket, also passed away in 2019 at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances.

Despite the passage of time, “Keeping Up Appearances” remains a beloved part of British television history, and its characters, especially Daisy and Onslow, continue to be fondly remembered by fans across the globe. The cast’s chemistry, their ability to make the mundane humorous, and the show’s exploration of family dynamics have ensured its place in sitcom history.
