Dame Patricia Routledge enjoys a private dining experience in Bognor Regis, proving she’s still as sharp and beloved as ever

Dame Patricia Routledge, the legendary actress best known for her role as the unforgettable Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances, recently enjoyed a delightful evening at a Bognor Regis restaurant. The 95-year-old veteran actress dined at Chez Moi, a well-loved eatery that opened its doors exclusively for her visit.

Accompanied by her carers, Dame Patricia was treated to a gourmet experience, savoring a meal specially prepared by chef and restaurant owner Michael Newton-Young. Her choice for the evening was a hearty serving of pork belly, followed by the classic French dessert, tarte Tatin.

According to Newton-Young, it was an honor to serve the actress, who left a lasting impression on him and his staff.

“She was bright as a button—brilliant and lovely,” he said, describing the celebrated star. “She’s completely compos mentis—sharp as a tack.”

The private dining experience was a special occasion for the beloved actress, who has maintained a quiet yet dignified presence in Chichester for more than two decades.

Since moving to Chichester in 2000, Dame Patricia has been a prominent figure in the local community. A devout Christian, she is known for regularly attending services at Chichester Cathedral, a place of worship she has supported both spiritually and financially.

In 2020, she played an instrumental role in a fundraising campaign that successfully raised £10,000 for the restoration of the cathedral’s roof.

Her love for the arts has kept her connected to the renowned Chichester Festival Theatre, where she has performed and attended numerous productions over the years. One of her last stage performances was as Lady Markby in An Ideal Husband, a role that showcased her continued ability to captivate audiences with her theatrical presence.

Though she has since retired from the stage, she is still seen attending performances, supporting the theatre that has meant so much to her throughout her life.

While Dame Patricia’s career spans over six decades across film, television, and stage, it was her portrayal of Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances that cemented her status as one of Britain’s most iconic comedic actresses. The hit BBC sitcom, which aired from 1990 to 1995, remains a beloved classic, thanks in large part to her impeccable comedic timing and ability to bring the character to life with an unforgettable blend of pompousness and charm.

Hyacinth Bucket, with her relentless attempts to climb the social ladder and her insistence on pronouncing her surname as “Bouquet,” became one of TV’s most recognizable characters. Dame Patricia’s performance was so powerful that even decades later, fans still recall her portrayal with great affection.

In recognition of her contributions to British television, the BBC recently aired Dame Patricia Routledge… Remembers Keeping Up Appearances, a documentary in which she reflected on her time as Hyacinth. In the special, she looked back fondly on the role that made her a household name, reminiscing about the joy it brought to audiences and her own experience working on the show.

Despite stepping away from the limelight in recent years, Dame Patricia’s influence in the entertainment industry remains significant. She has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including a Tony Award, an Olivier Award, and the prestigious title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for her contributions to theatre and charity.

Dame Patricia’s visit to Chez Moi was not just an ordinary dining experience—it was a testament to the respect and admiration she commands, both from those who have worked with her and the public who adore her. The decision to open the restaurant exclusively for her speaks volumes about her status as a cherished public figure, not just in the world of entertainment, but within the community she calls home.

Her enduring wit, grace, and warmth continue to inspire those who meet her. As she enjoyed her meal in the quiet comfort of the restaurant, it was a reminder that while she may have stepped away from the stage and screen, Dame Patricia Routledge remains a treasured figure in British culture.

Whether she’s gracing the theatre stage, supporting her beloved Chichester Cathedral, or simply enjoying a well-prepared meal, she carries with her an elegance and brilliance that have defined her career and life.
