Adele’s Comments About ‘Haunted’ Home Are Scaring Off Buyers for $7M Mansion, Says Realtor

Adele has unintentionally cast a shadow over her former mansion’s marketability, leading to claims that her comments have made the property “unsellable.” The singer’s 2012 revelation about the property being haunted has reportedly had lasting effects on the mansion’s reputation, and its current owner, Nicholas Sutton, says it has severely hindered efforts to find a buyer. Sutton cited the haunting allegations in official planning documents obtained by The Times, explaining how it negatively impacted the marketing of the estate.

Adele rented the mansion, known as the Lock House, in West Sussex for six months back in 2012. During an interview with Anderson Cooper on CBS, Adele described the mansion as “all quite scary” and mentioned feeling unnerved by unexplained noises. She even went so far as to hire a female bodyguard to stay with her due to the eerie experiences. The singer’s remarks have drawn comparisons to other celebrities like Joan Rivers and Nicolas Cage, who have also claimed paranormal experiences in their homes.

The mansion, which is now listed for nearly $7.4 million, boasts 10 bedrooms, seven en suite bathrooms, an indoor swimming pool, a guest cottage, an in-ground pool, a tennis court, and gardens. Despite these lavish features, Sutton has struggled to sell the property, which he’s actively been trying to offload for about 14 years. His efforts were further thwarted when an interested buyer withdrew their offer in 2020 after hearing about the supposed haunting, which Adele had publicly referenced during her stay.

With little demand for the mansion in its current form, Sutton has proposed converting the property into apartments and has sought approval from the local council. He emphasized that such a transformation would preserve the mansion’s historical significance, as it was once a convent. Previously, Sutton had applied to convert the property into five apartments, but his request was denied. The mansion, originally built in 1909, has a storied past, including being divided into 26 lots and sold off in 1971 before being repurchased by a church and used as a convent.

Now, after years of failed attempts to sell, Sutton is looking to repurpose the space due to the ongoing lack of demand, which he attributes to the long-lasting stigma surrounding its haunted reputation.
